Initiatives
The Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County brings together the collective expertise of the community, families and youth to support a community-wide prevention movement to reduce substance abuse among Nevada Counties Youth. The purpose of the coalition is to reduce substance abuse among youth and to establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, nonprofits and government agencies to help prevent substance abuse.
Community Initiatives
NEO
“A new way of thinking” that gives teens in our community the opportunity to choose not to use drugs or alcohol. NEO youth sector organizes events in the community for youth by youth. Instead of telling teens not to use drugs, NEO gives them a choice to be involved with something bigger, giving them a voice. Visit ncneo.com
“Clean out your Cabinets”
Collection of surplus and expired prescription drugs started in 2008. To reduce the accessibility of prescription drugs, especially narcotics, the Coalition established a series of collection dates, and collection bins for disposal. The Grass Valley Police Department has a bin for prescription drugs disposal.
40 Assets
The power of assets to protect and promote positive behaviors. Young people with more assets are less likely to engage in risky behaviors or make unhealthy choices. Coalition volunteers are trained to provide 40 Asset workshops for community groups, businesses or government entities. Visit got40.org
SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment)
In partnership with UCLA’s Integrated Substance Abuse Programs, the Coalition provides training to healthcare professionals. The goal is to teach providers how to screen their patients for alcohol and drug problems effectively and to refer those in need to treatment.
Underage Drinking Reduction
STOP Act grant/Social Hosting Ordinance. Alcohol remains the #1 drug of choice for those under 21 years. The Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County secured additional funding under the Sober Truth on Preventing (STOP) Underage Drinking grant in 2008 to focus on this problem.
Drug Free Workplace
Becoming a certified Drug-Free Workplace means an employer has a written Drug Free workplace program, does pre- and post-offer employment drug/alcohol screening, have a “reasonable suspicion” drug/alcohol testing program, conduct appropriate training for managers, supervisory personnel and employees, participate in an annual refresher meeting on Drug Free workplace, and is a member of the Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County. learn more
